The Roanoke Times
© January 26, 2013 Virginia State Police senior trooper J.A. Jones is at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after being intentionally hit with a car by an unidentified man at about 6:45 a.m. today.

Police say 48-year-old Jones stopped to check on a pedestrian walking on Virginia 100 at the Cleburne Wayside near the entrance to the New River Valley Airport in Pulaski. When Jones offered help to the man, the man became combative and ran to a blue car, which left the area.

Police say within seconds of the blue car driving away, Jones saw a red car nearby that also started to leave the scene. Jones motioned for the red car to stop and the red car then turned toward Jones and intentionally hit him at what police called “a high rate of speed” in a news release this afternoon. Police said Jones tried to jump out of the way but the car hit him and knocked him to the ground before driving away.

Jones was flown to Roanoke Memorial for treatment of serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. The police say Jones will remain there overnight. Jones is a 21-year veteran of the Virginia State Police and works mainly in Area 24, which includes Pulaski and Giles counties.

An investigation is under way. Anyone with information about either vehicle or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Virginia State Police at 276-228-3131 or toll-free in Virginia at 800-542-8716.
