Forgive me for intruding, but I have a pet theory about Bay Area real estate:

There is a "financial convection" process going on in the Bay Area. As certain companies have done (really) well with respect to their stock appreciation, those employees with stock options cash out and move into the center from the outlying areas to be closer to work, or move up to (relatively) nicer homes. As people retire, they move out of the area, and often to other states with a lower cost of living. This is what has kept the housing costs relatively high the area.

Yes, and there also some interesting action underfoot as well. For an example, the parents of one of my friends here has offered him a house in the Bay area. They want him to move back so they had this house that they had inherited and have rented out for over ten years. So he and his wife are moving back to the Bay area this month.

Similar scenarios like that play out all the time in CA. Despite the high cost of living and the travails of Sacramento, CA still is attractive to some people and to cause them to move there...........and that's enough to keep prices high.

Personally, the 1980s were also a period of relatively high-cost real estate.

Yes, the Bay area has been an expensive housing market for a long time.
