I don't hold the majority belief that analysts are a bunch baffoons that should be laughed at...... I truly believe that most of them are able to seek out information and draw conclusions in a timely and for the most part accurate manner. Do I use their upgrades/downgrades to buy or sell a particular stock? Hell no, it's just another piece to the puzzle. But their input has value to me. Look at what's happened to 3Com over the last month or so. What analysts were able to call the Q correctly. A few of them did.... assuming 3Com does a profit of .03-.10 per share.
