and nobody gives a flying fig about the plumbing underneath anyway.

True on the hardware side as well. Largely this is because the hardware and software are powerful enough this time around that we don't need to obsess about them, which is much different than in the PC era (for the first couple of decades anyway).

That said, one area where Apple could continue to really innovate would be the software side, particularly very effective AI. There are many things I'd like my generally idling CPU to do for me, but the software doesn't exist. So perhaps TC doesn't need to invent new hardware categories every couple of years to keep the boat afloat if he can just figure out some really astonishing software for the existing ones.

I've noticed lately that I'm gravitating more and more to a rather small number of applications that let me work on the same "stuff" from whatever computing device I happen to be using at the time. Eg, something like Evernote, where my laptop, S3 and tablets all have the same app, and the documents I create/edit all live somewhere-I-have-never-traveled. Google Drive and Google Docs is part of this - Apple has nothing equivalent.

Apple has nothing equivalent? I beg to differ.

I use Notes, which comes with every iOS and OS X device. It syncs all my notes via iCloud, seamlessly. I can also synchronize my calendars, iTunes playlists, photos, etc.

I sync To-Dos, and of course all my email as well.
