The media said "caps". Which include both the Arctic and Antarctic. There is also Greenland.I am fully aware that the Arctic is floating on water. I've posted that here many times.

Ditto about the Antarctic ice getting thicker. And pointed out why this is completely unsurprising in a global warming scenario. That is when Taro started playing word games.

You however, failed to mention that the West Antarctic ice sheet is melting faster than it is accumulating in snowfall. While less that 10% of the total mass of ice in Antarctica, it still is a substantial amount. It currently amount to about 0.25mm per year of sea level rise.

Greenland is a special case. Any significant melting would mean the water off of Greenland would be of lower density. That would lead to the downwelling that drives the Great Ocean Conveyor being compromised. Which, amongst other things drives the Gulf Stream. This is one of the possible things that caused the Little Ice Age. The timing is about right. And a decrease in the downwelling has already been measured.

It is the media. What do you expect? That is a lot of ice. And it takes a lot of energy just to melt it. This is the same media that was pushing the global cooling during the 1970s, despite the best science of the day.

The point being that concerns over global warming far preceded the fall of the Soviet Union. Unless you want use a geological timescale...
