Yes, I meant the first type, not the globalizing megalomaniacs.
There are some internationalist traders that eschew nationalism. If those are what you have in mind, then I agree with you that it is a good movement. The first group want to extend the yoke of tyranny worldwide, with themselves starring as the tyrants.
The way to successful nationalism is via Tradable Citizenship so that everyone actually benefits from a better country because their share price goes up. Here's my rant on the idea: mqurice.blogspot.co.nz

There would of course be some who would rather benefit from self-dealing, but more people would have a direct interest in preventing bulk cronyism and rip-offs by takers. When people are simply serfs like cattle to be milked and sheep to be fleeced, they don't have any ownership of the state other than what they can personally extract from the makers by using government to loot them. The tragedy of the commons means each has to get while the getting is good. Meanwhile, the makers bail out somewhere else if they are able, or give up and drink vodka.

Theoretically, everyone benefits from a good community, with improving public assets, but such communism has tended not to work very well as a motivating influence.

For the US to ever succeed...........would require a fundamental reset of attitudes

I can't help thinking of a Readers Digest anecdote from long ago:

A Brit approaches a hand on a Montana ranch and asks "Pardon, but could you direct me to your master?"

The cowboy thinks for just a second and responds "Y'know, I don't believe the son of a bitch has been born yet."

In a nation approaching serfdom for the masses, that mindset is largely erased.
