Motorola to spend $3 billion at Va. plant

Wednesday December 3, 5:39 pm Eastern Time

CHICAGO, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Motorola Inc said Wednesday it will
spend about $3 billion on the first phase of a semiconductor manufacturing plant at West Creek, near Richmond, Virginia.

The project represents the largest single initial investment
in the history of Motorola, said Motorola chairman Robert
Galvin, in a news release received here.

Construction of five buildings, including a wafer fabrication facility, wil begin during the second quarter of 1998. Shipment
of products to customers is expected to begin by mid-2000.

At the completion of phase one, there will be about 2500
employees at the West Creek site.

The land, comprising 230 acres, was purchased in 1995 to build
a plant to make PowerPC chips, but Motorola delayed the project
citing a change in strategy away from single-product facilities,
which would give its manufacturing centers more flexibility
in meeting fast-changing market demands.

Motorola said it had also obtained an option to purchase an
additional 140 acres for its West creek project. Motorola will
buy the second parcel, but does not plan to build on it during
the first phase of construction, company officials said.

During the first phase of construction, Motorola will build
about 1.5 million square feet of space, more than doubling the
first phase plans announced in 1995.

The West Creek facility will be capable of manufacturing many
types of semiconductors -- the electronic circuits that are used
in personal computers, pagers, cellular telephones, automobiles
and microwave ovens.
