Hi Max.
I will write my vision of future software market and probably Centura's position in it. My vision say's, that there will be two diffrent software markets in future. One of them is software, which comes with computers (MS-Windows, MS-Office, Windows NT, Netware, s.o.) and other is solution market, where solution provider (probably small consultant company) will integrate the solution from components.
To be succseful on solution component market, the key components are: tools, technology components and community. And the world (developers) are moving closer using internet, this will give good base to change components.
The competition in tools market:
Microsoft - Microsoft is very succesful in software market, which comes with computers, but have anybody seen a software proffesional, who loves Microsoft (of course, they can exist, but they are minority)? Microsoft tools will be just components for MS-Office, even if they are just good as other tools. Microsoft haven't also succeeded his Solution Partner network here. Most of the Solution Partners here are running MS-Office courses, not integrating solutions.
Borland - Good tools, but the distribution channel is same as Microsoft (in here, anyway). Lack of community support and small specialist/consultants companies, which exist for Centura. Here I can buy Delphi from computer shop, where the salesman haven't even open the box. Do I really buy $5000 software tool, without knowing, whats inside.
Oracle (Developer 2000) - I'm here have currently get lot's of interest for our applications and development tools from big Oracle's partners. They have tried to get same kind of productivity, openess and good looking results using Developer 2000 and have'nt suceeded. Oracle will need a co-operation with Centura, to get Centura technology, otherwise this company is history (as current stock movement will show, lucky me to get out of this stock on right time). Hope Larry will soon understand this.
Sybase/Powerbuilder - Currently competitor, but probably same kind of future as Oracle with Developer 2000. Of course much later.
Forte, Magic, IBM tools and s.o. - Good tools, but mainly based on their special CASE methodology. Not open enough and mostly used with big companies for one project only. No international community support and position in international market. Can be competitive in U.S. (Magic in Isreal), but not globally.

Of course, there can be more names in U.S., but I was writing on names, I know here.
