The NRA wants every lowlife punk to have easy gun access -- it fuels their "more guns" mentality. As long as the crooks and the nutjobs have plenty of guns, they can say that the "good guys" need to buy guns to protect themselves. The last thing the NRA wants is less gun violence -- they need the US to have as much violent crime as possible, the more violence the better it is from the point of view of the NRA -- and the NRA refusing to engage in a serious discussion of background checks is but one example.
