Next week at the Western Cable Show...................................

ijumpstart.com

Scientific-Atlanta [SFA] will use the show to tout its harmony-compliant Explorer 2000. While other vendors are talking about next-generation digital set-top boxes, S-A says its product already is next-generation and meets the parameters of OpenCable. While Time Warner [TWX] will be the first op to deploy the set-top in 1998, S-A will demo the device using three satellite dishes and a headend to simulate a mini cable plant. S-A will use three navigators-Starsight, Prevue and an internal S-A unit-and will demonstrate the web browsing and e-mail capabilities of the box using Power TV, Worldgate and an unnamed supplier's services. - Hybrid Networks [HYBR] will use its 2-way QPSK technology to demonstrate voice over broadband and video conferencing on its Series 2000 Cable Modem and headend equipment at the show.

Cool3DVD.................................................

E4's Cool3DVD Solution Brings Cool 2D/3D, DVD to Developers' Fingertips

E4 (Elecede Technologies, Inc.) has announced Cool3DVD, an integrated solution that offers high-performance 2D/3D graphics and theater-quality DVD on a single, low-cost add-in card. Cool3DVD features the next-generation Mpact 2 media processor with Mpact Mediaware for 3DVD from Chromatic Research. E4 ultimately intends to leverage Chromatic's Mediaware product roadmap to offer additional multimedia capabilities such as 3D surround and wavetable audio, video editing, and videoconferencing. The Mpact 2 chip provides 10 to 20 times the performance of first-generation 3D graphics processors, resulting in faster and more realistic 3D games. In addition, because the graphics and video are processed on the same chip, Cool3DVD is capable of providing MPEG video as textures on 3D graphics objects. Cool3DVD supports DVD specifications, including MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital audio playback. It also features multiple language capability (eight-track multilingual support), 32-track subtitle support, support for Pan & Scan and widescreen formats, multiple-angle support, built-in copy protection decryption, and support for full VGA/DVD integration, including high-quality, scalable DVD video in a window.
