My kids are lucky, because I saved enough for them during their pre-college days to pay for everything, but I still make both of them work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the school year and all the summer months, if they want my money for room, board, tuition and books. They have to pay for their own entertainment, gas, and car insurance. It builds character. hell, I had to work 25-30 hours a week. One year, I burned through the money I had budgeted for food, so I called my dad for more money and he told me there was none. I ate tuna and crackers for two weeks until I got my next paycheck and was able to eat properly. Those experiences burn into you and make you appreciate things and the hard work it takes to succeed and get ahead. I don't expect everyone to be that lucky, as my kids, but I see many of their friends getting ridiculously stupid degrees that won't earn them a nickle in life, while they piss away their college days drinking and carousing. I don't mind the drinking and carousing. I did my share in my day, but I do mind the lack of balance and the expectation that our gov't (meaning you and me) will pick up the tab when they default on their student loans and are on welfare because they didn't work hard and study to make themselves responsible members of society. And don't tell me that's an aberration. I see too much of it among the kids these days and our gov't enables that crap with low loan rates for worthless degrees. I have one son in business and accounting classes, with the intent to go to law school after a couple years of work (don't know about law...too many lawyers if you ask me). The other is just starting out, but is leaning towards computer science. Both my kids will find work and will be contributing members of our economy. They'll stand on their own feet. Even had they had to take out large school loans like I did, they still would have come out ok. Art history and other bull shit degrees like that should be done as a minor or as an extra on top of the work load that will get you a meaningful career. Foundation first and fun stuff later. That's what becoming a responsible adult means.
