You are right...it does start off a bit slow. -g- But the slides are actually worth it!

Yes, one only needs to read the bible thoroughly to get the picture. When I was young, I read Asimov's guide to the bible. It was an excellent jumping off place of seeing it all in perspective.

Aquinas and Augustine ought to be on the minimal reading list for anyone wishing to understand the development of Christian thought. As well, "Early Christian Fathers" by Cyril Richardson.

And to fully understand how degrading and reprehensible the most heroic and acclaimed Christians could be, one needs to read some of the writings of Martin Luther whose beliefs (in fleshing out centuries of Christian doctrine and Jewish/Christian conflict) paved the way for National Socialism and the persecution of the Jews.
