I'm inclined to believe that idea -- re: hot money. The market has such a small percentage of retail investors now that it's turning into a wave machine of aglo-driven hot money sloshing around. The algos want to draw in retail investors and shake their retirements out of them, but at the same time, grapple with each other so the algo-writers and their sponsor company executives can get multi-million dollar bonuses.

It hardly ever serves an economic purpose any more, just a machine to generate money which spins off 1/10th of 1% to Congress to keep tilting the playing field further in their favor.
