magicjack requires some connection to an internet service. cable, fibre, dsl original magic jack uses usb connection to a computer connected to the internet. phone line is only on when computer is up an running. computer must be xp or win 7 or mac/apple something.

Magic jack plus adds an ethernet connection and can be connected directly to a home local area net. It can be connected directly to a network router or multiport switch,

It is the least expensive phone service.

I used magicjack for a couple of years. Used an old dell laptop as my jack connection appliance.

I now use ooma, It is more expensive but also has call blocking and forwarding or multiring to my cell phone.
you can log into your ooma phone account and see a log of all calls. you can add your own ID and block. You can also block all calls without ID.
