Best guess, besides "Peak Cheap Oil" (concept invented by EJ at iTulip) being alive and well, is that US energy sufficiency is a pipe dream, barring truly massive and unlikely changes via much more conservative usage by the average citizen.

Oil supply as energy will peak in the US between 2017-2019 (tight/shale oil peak per the EIA's estimate).

The political and green and vested interest elements make the general energy supply picture very unclear, whether wind, solar, nuclear or natural gas etc., other than to say that energy prices will go up.
Pray for a huge and true breakthrough in something like LENR, and with minimal prey(ing).
