don. i can't find any news either and i've checked a number of sources. here are the facts i know.

shiva and nortel are renegotiating the terms of their agreement. shiva characteized the change as positive for them in their conference call in october. there was some concern by analysts that the old deal did not provide enough upside for shiva if their joint products for nortel.

the shiva remove access ports, switches, concentrators and network management software are a key part of nortel's very popular power networks and internet solutions. shiva characterized their relationship as "strategic" (i think that was the word) in their last call and said both parties recognized the importance of their relationship. the new deal has to be in place for 1998.

so, my sense is that this will be very postive news for shiva when it comes out. i can't imagine nortel dumping them. i suppose a less than satisfactory deal would be negative because they are somewhat dependant on nortel at this point.

it seems it would be in nortel's interest to accomodate shiva as much as possible and perhaps even to acquire the company. we all know shiva has some of the best technology. nortel has great management and marketing as well as a complete enterprise solution that may even be better than lucent's. if they can work out a good partnership for both, shiva should prosper on its own. if not, nortel should just take it over. also, if nortel were to cut shiva loose i think the company might find itself the object of other suitors. all this last part is my speculation.
