I'm sorry. Blame me. I stirred it up again. I thought there might be something interesting there to talk about.

Otherwise I have no idea what this topic had to do with the subject of this thread.

Well, maybe a few in case Martin McGuinness with his gun got carried away or too many nail bombs started flying: <none of these troops should have had live amo >

That doesn't surprise me: < i read that the majority of catholics believe in the union and do not want british withdrawal. I assume they are use to the dole. > Cutting off the cash flow is probably not what they'd like. Having free money tempts a lot of people. Having a British passport is probably pretty good too.

Truce back on here.

From the point of view of the subject, "Did the Great Experiment Fail?" there is more than a bit of warning in the dissolution of the British Empire and how that played out in places like Ireland, India and around the world. The British Empire was a great experiment too and a huge success for well over a billion people. The USA picked up from where Great Britain left off and took the Great Experiment to a whole new level with spectacularly phenomenal success.

It's too early to say The Great Experiment Failed. The problem is just excessive expectations. Those can be adjusted by saying to all government employees "Sorry, no pension. Get a job or go and see your family. We ran out of money". If the electorate decides to do that, then that's what will happen. If that doesn't cut costs enough, say to everyone else, "Sorry, no public pensions after all. Go and see your family or get a job. We have canceled the minimum wage so you should be able to get a job of some sort." Cut free medical treatment and deregulate the medical cartel. That would save big heaps more. If people want to hire a doctor, they will have to get out their own actual money. With things like aspirin available without a doctor's prescription, people would be able to save a lot of money. Might as well cancel the dole while we're at it. If people want money, they can get a job. With no minimum wage, they'll be able to get a job making soft toys for people in China.
