I believe most SI members are sophisticated enough to discern the difference between a genuine SI poster's link and a newbie spammer's lame attempt at circumventing the anti spam rules of SI, by spelling out their spam destination, longhand.

In other words, I believe my suggestion is a step in the right direction.

Feel free to disagree with me, as usual.

Oh, but first, please come up with a better solution. Sick and tired of reporting spammers to you.

TIA!

My two cents is that disallowing links will for sure lessen the effectiveness of spam (i.e. people might impulsively click on a link but will draw the line at having to type words into their browser address bar), but not the initial volume. The key word here is "initial" because it's a toss-up whether this loss of effectiveness will be a deterrent for the spammer to continue a wasted effort going forward. The only way to find out for sure is to try the idea and see if it works.

Consider this approach like turning on a spam shield. A spam attack triggers it. While the shields are down, "real" new posters who need to post links can simply message the admin for a waiver. When the spam attacks stop for a period of time, the shields are lifted and everyone can post links freely again. If the idea doesn't work, or if a better approach is found, then consider this experiment over.
