I would love to drive around the US on a motor home and have web access!

Wouldn't we all! Right now the Metricom service is only in 3 cities. They've been trying to roll it out in LA for almost a year, I think, and have vague plans on expanding into NY, but it takes quite a bit of time to get the right of ways for all the utility poles (plus electicity) for every city and town they want to install this in. Their service is only practical for densely populated cities and towns, not for rural areas.

However, as you said the user base may not be that large. Unless people like salesman start using it to hookup into their companies web site etc.

Traveling saleswomen would be one of their customer profiles. But I think they'd pay more for satellite access if it provided true mobile access instead of Ricochet. Also, they need to have a wide service area for this to be viable - a saleswoman can't be limited to only selling in areas covered by Ricochet.
