I thought it came with Win 7 Pro with upgrade to Win 8. Instead it came with Win 8 Pro and right to downgrade to Win 7. The downgrade process seemed complicated so for a week or so I vacillated between sending it back and learning Win 8. I finally decided I needed the brain exercise. After all, I have been through all the MS operating systems starting with the first PC with two floppies and no hard disk. (The XP came out about a year to two later and we got one of those and thought it was terrific.) This was against my long standing policy not to ever again upgrade until Service Pack 2 was available. Sure enough it was a mistake. I have countless hours involved in getting everything moved over and learning how to find my old friends like Control Panel. After I hand copied everything I wanted from my old laptop I found an app ("program" is now a bad word!) that looks like it will move stuff from the old machine fairly painlessly. Oh yes, setting up the network was a piece of cake once I learned the new terminology. The change the names of things like Workgroup just to keep you on your toes! The system seems to be amazingly stable for an original release. But, for no reason last week the option to login with the fingerprint reader or the face recognition system stopped being an option. The HP idiots in India chatted with me for several hours until I realized they were on Win 7 and were basically clueless about Win 8. I re-installed a bunch of stuff and now it works. But, today on 3 occasions it will not wake up from Sleep mode. The lights are on and the fan is running, but the screen is black until I hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Fortunately this seems to be one of the methods (but not recommended) to power down and it seems to recover OK and if it has to repair improperly closed files it does it pretty quickly. Other than those two items it has run flawlessly. The best thing I can say about Win 8 documentation is that it sucks! Once I got everything I want on the task bar and on the desktop, most of the time it works just fine and is reasonably similar to Win 7. Without a touch screen the Start Screen is a huge waste. But I have learned to live with it. I really, really like the HP 4540s machine. I think this brain exercise has warded off dementia for at least 2 or 3 more years<ggg>. If you can find a machine you like with Win 7, buy it quick and wait a couple of years for Win 9. Or, you might go the Win 7 downgrade route. In retrospect it doesn't seem so bad, but then who knows what problems that will present to your brain? Good luck! Blessings, JRH
