Apple Printers Overwhelmed by Powerful Macs 12/03/97

Newsbytes, Wednesday, December 03, 1997 at 15:10

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1997 DEC 3 (NB) -- REPEAT/ By Patrick
McKenna, Newsbytes. Apple Computer Inc. [NASDAQ:AAPL] says a beta
"patch" is expected to arrive on the company's World Wide Web site
late Tuesday. The patch is designed to correct a problem Apple
StyleWriter 4100 and 4500 printers experience with the company's
faster Power Macs and Power Macintosh G3 systems.

According to company spokesperson Natalie Welsh, the troubled
computer hardware and software company realized the problem in the
past few days. "The problem is in the printer drivers," said Welsh.
"The issue is a timing problem with the serial port."

At this time the problem appears to strike with Apple's fastest
machines. The company says the problem has occurred with Macintosh
systems based on the new PowerPC G3 microprocessor and with Power
Macintosh 9600/300, 9600/350, 8600/250 and 8600/300 systems.

"We expect to have a permanent patch by the end of the month," added
Welsh.

A technical note on Apple's web site (http://www.apple.com ) reads:
"The Color StyleWriter 4100 and Color StyleWriter 4500 are not
compatible with the owner Macintosh G3 computers. When attempting
to print using the current driver [v1.0.3] (an) error dialog (will
be) displayed."
