1998 may be year of e-commerce

More than 28 percent of all Internet households in the U.S., or 7
million households, have, to date, purchased goods or services via
the World Wide Web, according to the most recent Internet survey
released Monday by NetRatings Inc., an entirely Web-based online
research and analysis company. The study, based on a random
telephone survey of more than 2,000 Internet households, was
conducted by Wirthlin Worldwide.

Tim Meadows, NetRatings marketing vice president, told Internet
Daily the e-commerce finding was "striking" and "means it's likely
1998 will be a blossoming year for electronic commerce on the Web,
and should be a strong signal that the much-publicized concerns
about security and privacy on the Net may be receding." At the
Internet World trade show in York City, Meadows said his company's
NetRatings Online Observer service is set to debut in the first
quarter of next year and will offer Internet advertisers,
marketers, publishers, media planners and site sales executives
with an easy-to-use database of Web usage information for
developing and evaluating site-driving programs and banner ads, as
well as competitive site activity.
