You are assuming that

a) Criminals aren't armed.
b) Circumstances allow you to draw your weapon.

Neither of which is a good bet. Even if the criminal has no access to a gun, a knife is certainly available. And in close quarters, it is even more dangerous than a gun. Criminals rarely signal that they are going to victimize you. Accosting you by surprise is the common MO. By that point, they are in close quarters. See above.
