To clarify however:

Dell said: "the latest reductions are the result of component
cost savings"


The authors opinion is: The price cuts may be another
signal that demand for high-end PC systems is slowing because
there aren't any compelling reasons to upgrade to newer
technology


This is typical. I don't doubt however that some of it is
competetion. The $1000 price point will be a standard in
the business segment very soon and everyone will have
a solid offering. Businesses will buy from the big 4 PC
makers increasing their market share more rapidly and
lengthening the casualty list among tier2&3 outfits.

Among all this sub-zero hoopla however, remember, last
year, entry level business machines were $1100 - $1200
and could have been less if PC makers were willing to
extend the life of 90Mhz Pentium and standard Fast Page
Mode Dram. This is whats happening today... extending the
life of trailing edge technology will allow entry level
systems to be priced below $1000. The big 4 will continue
to grow and be very profitable.
