Corrupting We Will Go

by Mona Charen Feb 08, 2013

Democratic Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is having a bad month. He recently wrote a check to a large donor for nearly $60,000 reimbursing him for the generous gift of trips on a private jet. The paperwork had "fallen through the cracks," an aide explained.

Under investigation by the FBI regarding allegations that he engaged underage prostitutes during visits to the Dominican Republic (the destination of those jet trips), the senator was also recently embarrassed when it emerged that an 18-year-old intern on his staff who was helping with immigration issues was 1) an illegal alien and 2) a registered sex offender. Two AP stories suggest that the young man's arrest was delayed by federal officials until after Nov. 6, when Menendez was safely reelected to a second 6-year term.

None of this came up when Menendez, the presumptive new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was interviewed on ABC's "This Week." Martha Raddatz confined her questions to immigration and such.

The non-lewd aspects of the Menendez unspooling scandal are actually more important because they illuminate the absolutely inescapable corruption that accompanies the expansion of government.

Menendez was the guest of Dr. Solomon Melgen on those visits to the Dominican Republic. Melgen, a generous donor to Menendez's campaigns and to the Democratic Party -- he contributed more than $700,000 to a PAC aimed at helping Democrats win the Senate -- recently purchased a company that provides port security. His company had apparently offered its services to a reluctant Dominican Republic.

The Dominican customs inspector described the contract, estimated to be worth $500 million over 20 years, as "exorbitant." The American Chamber of Commerce on the island opposed the deal. Melgen, an ophthalmologist, is nobody's idea of a security specialist. The Chamber's executive vice president told the Times that Melgen "has, to my knowledge, no previous experience in port security."

Enter Senator Menendez. He reportedly asked officials at the State Department to lobby Dominican officials to approve the deal. Menendez's chief of staff explained that the senator did nothing unethical. He has always "fought for U.S. companies that are not being treated fairly or have issues pending in other countries."

Except it also emerges that another key beneficiary of the port deal would be Senator Menendez's aide and close associate of 20 years, Pedro Pablo Permuy. Permuy was tapped to run the security company's operations.

It's certainly possible that Senator Menendez always speaks up for abused American companies that aren't getting fair treatment in other countries. But then, there are other explanations for his behavior. Consider that in 2009, according to the Washington Post, Menendez intervened in a federal audit of Dr. Melgen. Melgen was being investigated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for fraud. Menendez protested to investigators that the billing rules were ambiguous.

Last week, the FBI descended upon Dr. Melgen's offices in Miami and carted off dozens of boxes of documents. The FBI may be investigating Medicare fraud, the ports deal, the underage prostitutes or matters we have not yet heard about.

What the story illustrates is the way government power is bent to private purposes.
President Obama entered office boasting that lobbyists would be prohibited from serving in his administration -- thus keeping corruption at bay. In fact, the White House has freely granted waivers for the people it wanted, and at least 374 Obama administration officials have cycled through the revolving door.

But as the Menendez story shows, the presence of lobbyists in key posts is beside the point when elected officials misuse their power for friends and cronies. Barring lobbyists is window dressing. Corruption is the handmaiden of government. Remember that on Tuesday evening when the president sings its praises.

Drugs, Anyone? Ashley Anne Riggitano, NY Fashionsta jumps to her death after Facebook argument

Ashley Anne Riggitano a New York fashionista, jumped to her death from the George Washington Bridge on her 22nd birthday.

Feb. 8, 2013

Ashley Anne Riggitano, a New York fashionista, jumped to her death from the George Washington Bridge on Wednesday, after a heated Facebook argument with her best friend.

Riggitano, 22, allegedly was on Aderall and Klonopin when she jumped into the Hudson River at 4:40 p.m. on Jan. 6, which also happened to be her birthday, the Daily Mail reported.

According the several reports, Riggitano had gotten into a Facebook fight with her good friend Alison Tinari, who allegedly wrote her a post that's being considered as a contributing factor in the suicide.

“Go try to kill yourself on Xanax again, you unstable loser. Go f--k yourself and never speak to me again.”
The fashionista left a handwritten note found in her Louis Vuitton bag on the bridge. In the note, she stated that her "friends" were never there and were only interested in gossip. She also singled out four people she wanted excluded from her funeral.

A source has identified the four as Teresa Castaldo, Beth Bassil, Victoria Van Thunen and Samantha Horneff, Fox News reported.

Van Thunen was Riggitano’s business partner at Missfits, a jewelry-design business.

Reports indicate this wasn't the first time Riggitano attempted to commit suicide. Prescription drugs Adderall, used to treat ADHD, and Klonopin, an anti-panic drug, were also found in her bag.

Designer Alex Woo who employed Riggitano part-time said she appeared happy and was liked by everyone.

Exclusive: Ted Nugent proves 'liberals are two-faced hypocrites'
byTed Nugent Monday, February 11, 2013
wnd.com

Imagine for a moment if the tables were turned and a Republican president had issued an order that permitted the killing of American citizens with drones.

The country would go gonzo.

Liberals
would be screaming at the tops of their lungs about the president’s intentional violation of due process and civil rights.

Liberals would be demanding the president be charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Jesse Jackson and Al Not-So-Sharpton would be lisping their ebonic mumbo-jumbo that the policy and the president are racist and bigoted. They would organize protest marches in front of the White House, where they would burn effigies of the president.

The Huffington Post would run headlines such as: ”President wants to kill Americans” or “The butcher-in-chief.”

Red-faced with anger, Michael Moore would devour another dozen or so donuts, feign personal hygiene and then start his movie camera.

Sens. Dianne Feinstein, Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer would sling all kinds of slurs and disparaging remarks at the president and claim he is usurping his authority. They would encourage Americans to revolt.

The “99-percenter” crowd of intentionally unemployed Americans
would move into Lafayette Park across the street from the White House, where they would pitch their tents and refrigerator boxes, ingest massive amounts of mind-altering chemicals and then try to storm the gates of the White House.

Scores of Hollywood actors would scramble to be on television to proclaim they are leaving the country until the president is charged with murder and forced to resign.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
would ban all images of the president in New York City and encourage New Yorkers to fly the American flag upside-down as a distress symbol.

Piers Morgan would be so angry that he would encourage Americans to buy AR-15s and revolt.

CNN
would be running 24/7 coverage with panels of guests condemning the president and with live reports from the White House. Wolf Blitzer would be howling at the moon.

The residents of East St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago and other cities would burn their own neighborhoods in protest.

Left-wing musicians
would organize a massive pay-per-view concert to protest the president. The musicians would call the president a murderer from the stage. A big banner behind the stage would have a picture of the president and Adolf Hitler with the words, “Can you spot the difference?”

The heads of the ACLU would spin completely around and then spontaneously combust.

Vice President Joe Biden
would say something so outrageously stupid that even CNN wouldn’t air it.

Bill Maher
would piously stand on his comedy stage and say, ”I told you that you couldn’t trust a Republican, and now they are going to kill us all.”

MSNBC’s r
ating would increase to more than 60 viewers!

Jimmy Carter would encourage military members to desert, and then he would fly off to the Middle East where he would meet with Hamas leaders and apologize for America.

The National Education Association
would go on strike and claim it was doing it to benefit the children.

Representatives from NARAL, the pro-abortion group, would say had they known the Republican president was going to issue such an order, they would have wished their parents had aborted them.

But what has been the left’s response to President Obama’s decree to kill Americans who are suspected of being or associating with terrorists? Nothing. The big goose egg.

The reason for their condemnable silence is that President Obama is Democrat, a big-government liberal like themselves. Need any more proof that liberals are two-faced hypocrites?

Liberalism is hypocritical poison, and it’s on full parade for all the world to see.
