There is a difference between a police officer and a regular citizen. No one is going to rob a police officer, no profit in it Also, the police have a duty to respond to emergencies. So they have a chance to prepare. And finally, they are trained both in how to observe people and what to do in various situations. Even so, they often get killed themselves.

But, ok. Say someone accosts you for what ever reason. Rob, rape whatever. About the only scenario that is a win for you is the bad guy isn't armed. If He/she/it has a knife or gun, you probably won't be able to draw your weapon without getting injured or killed. Not that it is impossible, but odds are against it. Because bad guys don't wear signs. Or announce their intentions from a distance. Chances are they are going to be within reach of you. And prepared for violence.

In addition, if you are carrying, you probably suffer from the Zimmerman effect. In other words, the gun makes you invincible and you are likely to go places and enter into situations you might otherwise avoid. Now Zimmerman was lucky. If Trayvon had been an actual bad guy, he would have had a weapon instead of a bag of Skittles.
