Recession of 1973-1975 The economy had trouble because inflation remained high and started climbing because the underlying reasons for the inflation haven't been addressed for decades. Volcker's tight money policies fixed the problem at the expense of pitching the economy into recession again. There was no other appropriate policy to take.
