More amazing is how poor their aim was, considering especially that there was no one shooting back at them... Saw an incident one time where a guy in a van tried to run over a deputy standing in front of him. The deputy drew his weapon, and fired at the windshield. He got off 9 shots, before the guy hit him. 8 of them could have been covered with a 3 X 5 card. That, with the van headed right at him. Asked him later about it, and he didn't even recall seeing the sights on his pistol - just fired instinctively. LAPD could use some practice, it seems.
