Possum trapping was another government-sponsored effort to protect the native ecology against yet another imported pest. <Born in Papatoetoe Auckland, Crump worked for many years as a government deer-culler in areas of New Zealand native forest en.wikipedia.org > There is a great deal of commons territory in NZ that needs protection, management and allocation [such as fishing rights].

Now, there are so many hunters and such a shortage of wildlife to shoot at that hunters frequently shoot other people, often their friends on the other side of a valley, or somewhere nearby. Human eyes peering through trees can apparently look remarkably like deer eyes when the hunter is getting very excited. Their brains tell them they are seeing the thing they are looking for. In downtown USA, when a policeman goes rogue and seeks retribution for wrongs being done [by shooting other police], the police go nuts and shoot at women driving by who look nothing at all like their quarry but obviously look like deer. "Dang, they wuz in a truck and driving slowly in a very suspicious way, with somebody in the veehical so we shor did fink they wuz the terrorist". See The Simpsons
