suddenly, I like the Iron Sheik.

A lot of olympic wrestlers did go the route of "professional" wrestling. But with the advent of MMA, many more are going that route. And wrestlers make some of the best MMA competitors.

If you go back to the origins of the Olympics, the sports were really combat games or other endurance activities that enhanced survival in battle. Running, Hurdles, Javelin, shotput, the hammer, wrestling.....all combat related. There are some modern equivalents that were added: Fencing, judo, boxing, archery, even swimming, all fit into the same category.

I believe that any sport that has a strong professional program should automatically be excluded from the olympics. If I want to watch the best basketball in the world, I am going to watch professional american basketball, not the olympics.
