> A "design" company? That sounds like a company that does magazine layouts....

That's the attitude that prompted me to buy Apple stock. I knew a lot of people didn't understand Apple. I've made quite a bit of money off that knowledge.

Collecting, Analyzing, and Presenting Usability Metrics

Designing Visual Interfaces: Communication Oriented Techniques

Fonts and color schemes are for wimp designers. Did you know that a designer discovered that cholera was water born? How many lives did that save? Did you know the reason the first shuttle blew up was because of a mistaken choice of a graph illustrating frequency of problems with "O" rings at low temperatures? The designer used a bar graph with rocket ships, when the same data is plotted on a dot graph the danger becomes unmistakeable.

> I guess you mean that Apple does a better job of designing its products than competitors do of designing theirs.

Yes.

For example the iPod. Apple was the first to realize that the mini hard drive changed everything. I didn't understand it at first. I was thinking walkman. It was the fact you could carry your entire music collection.

Another example the iPhone: I predicted touch screen - I have a degree in design - I felt the main problem with smart phones was screen space, and I was right - that is design in a nutshell - if you identify the problem the solution is attainable.

How many companies tried to design a Pad and failed?

And as pyslent pointed out, people have been criticizing Apple's "high priced" computers for decades, yet they still sell boatloads and actually make a profit. Just ask Mike Dell.

Most people think design, cannot be perpetuated. I disagree. Jobs was absolutely the best at understanding how to nurture designer WITHOUT letting designers go hog wild on wild goose chases.

He learned his lesson and was totally pragmatic. The only question is can Apple continue to add value to its products.

I see you post on the Qualcomm thread.

I'm also interested in Qualcomm. Great company. I'm in San Diego. Met a few people who are lucky enough to work there.

But investing? That's a tough one. I've seen too many chip companies go down in flames. Chip design takes superior brains no doubt, but its all physics. Very hard to tell when a company is going to lose it, at least for me. But it is intriguing.

However EVERYONE already knows about Qualcomm and ARMH. A share is not cheap P/E wise.

Right now I'm reading this book:

Bridges: Three Thousand Years of Defying Nature

Hmm. Just noticed the price. I found mine in the "free books" box outside the library.

Bridge design is pretty interesting.

I'm sure the iPhone 5 is better than my Cherry Mobile cell phone, but it's not 5x better.

They may look the same and have the same buttons. But they will feel different and work differently. Ultimately, it comes down to the experience each device delivers. That's when things get tricky, because how does one go about assigning "x-times better" on something as abstract and subjective as user experience? What do you measure, adrenalin or endorphin levels? I've never figured that one out.

Looking at a Cherry Mobile 5" Android ICS selling for a bit over $100...dual-SIM!... yikes...No retina, and won't play high end games well, but....$110...yikes...

Are these things any good?

Will this post survive the moderation?

Where can I buy them in Canada?!
