Team USA still has a small percentage (5-10%?) of copper pennies in circulation, so there's a small subculture of people who hoard copper pennies by the tubful. They process mass quantities of circulating pennies to automatically sort out the older copper ones from the newer zinc ones. Currently it's illegal to melt down the copper ones, but that's expected to change when pennies inevitably cease to be legal tender.
