A small L2 (256K or so) on chip probably adds less than $10 to the production cost of a CPU in 0.25 um,

This lousy CPU manufacturer has been bothered by the $10 L2 cache that they have to pay to the SRAM factory. It should tell us that they are under extreme margin pressure for the first time since they introduced i386DX. Short makes sense with their overpriced stock price.
