Repeating: Where are the several stories of carry permit holders blowing people away?

Those statistics quoted in that article are the misleading apple/orange type. I've posted a bunch of examples of people defending themselves on SI that came up in the news ... and know by experience and common sense that most such examples never see the news. Most successful defenses don't even involve firing the weapon.

Police: 4 Attacked By Pit Bulls In Nassau County

Inside 30 Minutes, 2 Wild Dogs Altered The Lives Of A Teen Boy And 3 Women
LAKEVIEW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Police on Wednesday were searching for two dangerous dogs that attacked four people within half an hour in the Nassau County community of Lakeview. ...
Around 6:30 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was attacked by the dogs while walking on Parkside Road and Cedar Road, police said. He suffered injuries to his left arm.
About 10 minutes later, a 54-year-old woman was attacked while walking on Pinebrook Avenue and Parkside Road, police said. She also sustained injuries to her left arm. ...
At 7:01 p.m. Kashina Sylvester, 29, was in front of 33 Clinton Ave., when she was attacked by the pit bulls, police said. She suffered injuries to her face, both arms and left shoulder.
“I said, ‘Go home,’ and one lunged at me and grabbed onto the arm of my coat, and I became a chew toy for the two of them,” Sylvester said.
Sylvester suffered puncture wounds to the head, the arms, and the thigh.
A pit bull attacked my wife and me in our very own neighborhood while we were walking along a street. We were not merely threatened by the dog, we were actually attacked. There was one pit bull, not four, and we were unhurt. But as I explained here,
We were pretty shaken, frankly. I thought at the time that if I had been armed that problem would have been solved pretty quick. I did order two hardwood walking sticks with a metal jabbing tips and we have always carried them since. I also began carrying a locking-blade fighting knife honed to razor edge.

Then last summer my next-door neighbor, "Fred," was in his front yard when two pit bulls ran from across the street and charged straight at him. He ran for his front porch and had to kick one dog away before he got inside. He grabbed his 20-ga. shotgun and went back to the porch. The dogs charged him again and he shot one (just birdshot in the gun). They both ran away. Fred went inside and called the cops. Animal control located the dogs as belonging to residents across the street.

My town has a low crime rate. I am not really worried about a human attacker but I am legitimately concerned about the four-legged kind. The vast majority around here are penned and under control, but it only takes one or two that are not, as we and my neighbor came very close to finding out the hard way.

With only the walking sticks and the knife, I would have to do hand-to-hand combat with an attacking animal (or hand to paw, as it were). That is not a good plan. Armed with the 9mm, we are a lot more secure on our walks with a buffer zone of maybe 25 feet around us, which is about the maximum effective range of the LC9 with its three-inch barrel. We still carry the sticks and certainly do not want to harm someone else's animal, but we will not be victims when we are able otherwise. (Actually, I'd feel most secure carrying a light machine gun, but one does what one can.)
It's not just muggers or home invaders some of us are concerned about in self defense.

I will add to this .... within the past month or so, my soninlaw killed a pitbull which broke through a fence and entered his back yard. At the time, they had their lab-shepherd mix female dog in the house, the 2 and 4 yo daughters were in the house, and a chihuahua they'd found and taken in was in the backyard. Their lab mix dog went to the back door agitated and they thought she had to relieve herself so they opened the door and let her out before noticing the pitbull. The pitbull had already bit the head off the chihuahua and attacked their larger dog. My soninlaw had to go out and club the pitbull to make him let go their dog - he had her front paw locked in his mouth. He got the dog back in the house and called the police. They came out, said they couldn't do anything as it wasn't attacking them, and left. They did say he could "take care of it himself" though. He called animal control but they wouldn't come out .. perhaps because it was nighttime by then. At any rate, he took his shotgun out and killed the pitbull.

There really are unpredictable dangers in the world and you can't count on authorities protecting you and yours. Just a fact of life.

BTW this was not the first time he'd used that shotgun to defend his family.
