Average equivalent shares are used to calculate EPS.

This could be the same as outstanding shares, but may be greater because of convertible bonds & preferred stock, options, and warrants.
The rules on what to include when are part of accounting standards.

Cymer shares outstanding at 9/30/97 were 28,573,000.
Third quarter EPS was calculated using 30.5 million shares.
