Over the past few years my wife and I have noticed an increasing number of cars and people on benches outside of the public library in the evening, in the small town we take our summer vacations in on the Oregon Coast. Not a lot of other wi-fi options in this area, so it's the place to be - quite literally, the hot spot in town!

Oh, I just noticed as I entered the local lowes last week that they also had a free wifi sing on the door. During one of the previous power outages I used the local library. It even worked outside, outside of library hours.
Some here on SI may recall that in 2009 my BIL went missing on a motorcycle ride from Idaho back home to Denver (he missed a curve north of Salmon, ID and his body was found 3 weeks later). At any rate, when we were over in Montana looking for him, I found a location on the main street os Darby, MT, where I could sit on a bench and snag a free wifi signal to update email and such.

I am currently following several folks riding motorcycles in South America. Aside from Bolivia, most places they have visited seem to have pretty good wifi connections and they are generally able to update ride reports and upload photos. I found that to be the case as well when I was in Costa Rica in December.
