Political Leaders are often greatly beholding to the groups that brought them to power. Religious heads are not immune to this. They may have the reins but the horses are not in harness. Many good ideas and people are trodden while the charioteer fights to get the chariot toward its goal. Are they complicit, or just victim? Many men sell their souls for power while convincing themselves they can win out in the long run. But the devil is in the details, and their minions all came there through the fruit of the process, and they control the inner workings regardless. But Faustian tragedy is nothing new....just the new fools who believe they out play the devil.

Absolutely, I agree with your post.

The difference is that the pope is god's representative on earth and should reflect "what would Jesus do?"

I don't think Jesus would cover up such scandals..
