The above was a hypothetical situation, which would have hit many folks during the crash.

In my own case, I took out a mortgage on my house to finish a building which I had bought after finding a tenant who would lease it for 5 years. It's not part of a retirement plan.
In fact, it wasn't part of any plan. I never expected to be a commercial developer, a real estate flipper, an entrepreneur, a leading "very small town father", or a bank, let alone all of them in one year.
