I think the cause of all this is very simple and at a fundamental level everybody understands it.

Just two things suffice to explain it.

First, people are not aware of what it is they actually do in terms of consequences. The function of A's greed is to couch his/her language in terms of "this is good for B or for society". A may or may not be aware this is taking place --- so thoroughly deceptive is the mind of society.

Second, whenever an organization is constructed, it takes on a life of it's own. It matters not what the founder(s) may have wanted or planned for. Once the organization senses life, it becomes a living entity. What is it's goal? To survive at all costs. It's key elements become extremely creative in performing this function.

Everything else is incidental --- crime, criminals, business dinners and parades.

Such organizations include the entities you are familiar with .... religious institutions, governments, countries, universities, schools, rifle associations, football associations, mothers against potluck meals ....
