Governor Christie approved online gambling for New Jersey. Signed the bill yesterday. I see that as a positive for revenue, but I believe too many people will lose way beyond their means. It should be interesting what safeguards will be implemented to regulate fair gaming. It is a very addicting activity.

Maureen O'Connor, former San Diego mayor, lost $1B gambling

Maureen O'Connor, then-San Diego mayor (AP)

February 15, 2013 (SAN DIEGO) -- Maureen O'Connor was a physical education teacher who won a seat on the San Diego City Council when she was only 25 years old, later winning two terms as the city's first female mayor as she charmed voters with a populist flair.

But her rapid rise was matched by her fall, culminating Thursday when she acknowledged in federal court that she took $2.1 million from her late husband's charitable foundation during a decade-long gambling spree in which she won - and lost - more than $1 billion.

O'Connor pleaded not guilty to a money laundering charge in an agreement with the Justice Department that defers prosecution for two years while she tries to repay the foundation and receives treatment for gambling.

O'Connor, 66, once had a personal fortune that her attorney estimated between $40 million and $50 million, inherited from her husband of 17 years, Robert O. Peterson, founder of the Jack in the Box Inc. fast-food chain. She is now virtually broke, living with a sister.

O'Connor walked across the courtroom with a cane, appearing frail and struggling to maintain composure at one point as her attorney wrapped his arm around her shoulder and placed his hand on her head.

At a news conference, she said she always intended to repay the foundation and appeared to blame her behavior on a brain tumor that was diagnosed in 2011.

"There are two Maureens - Maureen No. 1 and Maureen No. 2," said O'Connor, who declined to take questions. "Maureen No. 2 is the Maureen who did not know she had a tumor growing in her brain."

News of O'Connor's gambling troubles and financial ruin elicited sympathy in her hometown. Magistrate Judge David Bartick told her that she left "a very strong legacy in the city of San Diego."

The U.S. attorney's office said O'Connor's medical condition influenced the decision to strike a deal, saying it may have been impossible to bring the case to trial. The tumor was removed but doctors submitted letters detailing significant ailments.

"Maureen O'Connor was a selfless public official who contributed much to the well-being of San Diego," said U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy. "However, no figure, regardless of how much good they've done or how much they've given to charity, can escape criminal liability with impunity."

O'Connor, the eighth of 13 children whose father was a boxer and nightclub owner and mother was a by Giant Savings Extension"">registered nurse, was elected to the City Council three years after graduating from San Diego State University. She was mayor from 1986 to 1992, San Diego's only Democratic leader over a four-decade span. She promoted community policing, championed the arts and oversaw completion of a downtown convention center.

O'Connor began gambling around 2001 as she struggled with pain and loneliness from the death of her husband from leukemia in 1994 and the passing of several close friends, said Iredale, who called it "grief gambling" in a court filing. Within four years, she was betting heavily.

O'Connor acknowledged taking $2.1 million from the R.P. Foundation between September 2008 and March 2009 to pay gambling debts, wager more and cover living costs. She was one of three trustees of the foundation, a nonprofit organization that supported the by Giant Savings Extension" ">Alzheimer's Association, City of Hope, San Diego Hospice and other charities.

Her annual gambling winnings peaked at more than $200 million, said Phillip Halpern, an assistant U.S. attorney. Prosecutors said they didn't know exactly how much she lost but that she also borrowed money from friends and sold property to gamble.

O'Connor sold a home in tony La Jolla for $2.5 million in 2010 that is down the street from former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

She also sold the Heritage House Hotel in the Northern California coastal town of Mendocino for $7.5 million in 2005 to investors who defaulted, Iredale said. She sued and plans to turn over any damages to repay the foundation.

BOB WOODWARD: Obama Is Showing 'A Kind Of Madness I Haven't Seen In A Long Time'

Read more: businessinsider.com

The Washington Post's Bob Woodward ripped into President Barack Obama on " Morning Joe" today, saying he's exhibiting a "kind of madness I haven't seen in a long time" for a decision not to deploy an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf because of budget concerns.

"Can you imagine Ronald Reagan sitting there and saying, 'Oh, by the way, I can't do this because of some budget document?'" Woodward said.

"Or George W. Bush saying, 'You know, I'm not going to invade Iraq because I can't get the aircraft carriers I need?'" Or even Bill Clinton saying, 'You know, I'm not going to attack Saddam Hussein's intelligence headquarters,' ... because of some budget document?"

The Defense Department said in early February that it would not deploy the U.S.S. Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf, citing budget concerns relating to the looming cuts known as the sequester.

"Under the Constitution, the President is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the President going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement. 'I can’t do what I need to do to protect the country,'" Woodward said.

"That’s a kind of madness that I haven't seen in a long time," he said.

Woodward's harsh criticism came after he stirred controversy last weekend by calling out Obama for what he said was "moving the goal posts" on the sequester by requesting that revenue be part of a deal to avert it.

Dog bites kid because dog is obviously racist, child's mom claims 2 hrs ago

A scrappy bull terrier escaped from his owner's yard, crossed the street and bit a 7-year-old girl. That story wasn't exactly newsworthy — until the victim's mother opened her mouth. "I feel that the dog is racist," Pam Nkosi said. "The way it behaved ... shows that it was not familiar with other races." The South African woman also says that the dog's owner hasn't been very neighborly since the incident: He hasn't checked on her daughter, nor did he offer to cover any of her medical bills. The police and the SPCA are investigating, but they're not ready to call the dog a racist yet. One SPCA inspector simply said that "domestic animals behave differently because of their upbringing." releasing criminals on to the streets to make a political point. Obama is mad, insane.

Last week it was announced that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has gutted the Border Patrol and blamed sequestration. Today it was announced that hundreds of illegal aliens have already been release from “local jails,” and sequester hasn’t happened yet. This is how Obama thinks he can pound Republicans into submission, get more tax hikes and get in the face of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who has righteously gotten into his a few times.

Never let a sequester go to waste, or miss an opportunity to keep every potential Democrat voter available.

Pinal County [Arizona] Sheriff Paul Babeu said Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement released more than 500 detainees in his county alone over the weekend. A spokesman for Babeu told FoxNews.com that ICE officials have said they plan to release a total of nearly 10,000 illegal immigrants…

Babeu described the move as a “mass budget pardon” and suggested the administration was going to unnecessary lengths to demonstrate the impact of the so-called sequester.

“President Obama would never release 500 criminal illegals to the streets of his hometown, yet he has no problem with releasing them in Arizona. The safety of the public is threatened and the rule of law discarded as a political tactic in this sequester battle,” he said. Source: Fox News

John Boehner

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH):

It is very hard for me to believe that they can’t find cuts elsewhere in their agency. I frankly think this outrageous. I’m looking for more facts, but I can’t believe that they can’t find the kind of savings they need out of that Department, short of letting criminals go free. ( View the video at CBS News_)

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA):

“It’s abhorrent that President Obama is releasing criminals into our communities to promote his political agenda on sequestration. By releasing criminal immigrants onto the streets, the Administration is needlessly endangering American lives. It also undermines our efforts to come together with the Administration and reform our nation’s immigration laws. Unfortunately, this Administration has a poor record of enforcing our immigration laws and has routinely sought to undermine them.”

Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL):

“The Administration’s forced release of those in ICE custody further reduces the chances of reaching a bipartisan immigration accord.

There is no logical or rational reason why the 5.3 percent cut to ICE’s operating budget would have to result in forcing law officers to immediately release already-apprehended illegal aliens and fugitives in federal detention. The last thing you would do to meet a budget cut of this size would be to voluntarily undertake actions that undermine the rule of law and endanger the public safety. These savings could be much more safely and rationally achieved, considering that they will be distributed among such areas as facilities maintenance, equipment maintenance, communications, travel, etc. The Administration also had months to plan for this eventuality and could have developed numerous alternatives to this reckless action.

It is clear the Administration is using the sequester as a convenient excuse to bow to political pressure from the amnesty groups, as it did with its unilateral decision to confer legal status on millions who are not lawfully present. With this new action, the Administration has further demonstrated that it has no commitment to enforcing the law and cannot be trusted to deliver on any future promises of enforcement.” Source of Goodlatte and Sessions quotations Limits to Growth

Deputies: Dog hurt when disabled man tossed into traffic
By Desiree Stennett, Orlando Sentinel
February 27, 2013
orlandosentinel.com

A known gang member was arrested Wednesday on robbery and attempted murder charges after snatching cash from a disabled man and pushing him and his wheelchair into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 192, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office said.

Jose Mojica de la Rosa survived the attack uninjured on Saturday evening, but his 9-month-old Chihuahua, Lola, broke a leg when she was crushed beneath the overturned wheelchair, according to interviews Wednesday afternoon.

"He pushed me," Mojica de la Rosa said of suspect Sonny Abreu, whom witnesses identified as the attacker, according to the arrest report.

Mojica de la Rosa said he had gone to a Shell gas station on the 4600 block of U.S. Highway 192 about 7 p.m. to withdraw $240 to pay for his rent. Illness and a stroke about 10 years ago forced him to use a motorized wheelchair, he said.

Abreu, 24, was standing nearby talking to another man and his wife and as he watched Mojica de la Rosa withdraw money, the arrest report stated. The other man later told detectives he recognized Abreu from serving time with him in the Osceola County Jail and refused when Abreu asked for help robbing the disabled man, according to the arrest affidavit.

"Jose advised the (suspect) pushed him so hard that he and his motorized wheelchair fell into the eastbound lanes of 192 … Jose stated he was scared for his life, fearing that he might be struck by passing vehicles that were passing within inches of him as he lay helpless in the road," the report stated. "He was only able to escape injury in the roadway because passing motorists and pedestrians stopped to help him."

When knocked from his wheelchair, Mojica de la Rosa had been holding Lola in his lap and the dog's leg was broken in the fall.

Abreu was arrested in Osceola County in 2009 and 2012 on burglary charges but was not convicted in either case. Although he is a documented member of an undisclosed street gang, deputies said the attack and robbery is not believed to be gang related.

In addition to attempted murder and robbery, Abreu is charged with abuse on a disabled adult, petit theft and animal cruelty. He remains held without bail in the Osceola County Jail.

Jawdropper: Black mob meets 'gay' beauty pageant

'If they had a president, he would look like Obama'

byColin Flaherty
Thursday, February 28, 2013

Video....
wnd.com

EDITOR’S NOTE: The links and video in the following report may contain offensive language.

Blacks throw chairs and tables in a violent outbreak at a "gay"beauty pageant in Charlotte, N.C., Feb. 25, 2013.

Black mob violence comes in all shapes and sizes: Big. Small. Lethal. And now, comical.

That is the overwhelming reaction from in and out of Charlotte, N.C., to what local media are calling a “brawl” at the Carolina Awards Ball.

But what radio personality Al Walsh said was really a “Chair War at a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Party!!!”

Chair wars took place early Monday morning in a large storage shed where 150 black people were celebrating the results of a ballroom pageant, where prizes in almost a dozen categories were awarded to black men who dressed like women.

One of the contestants, unhappy with the results, threw a chair.

Then, it was on.

In the four minute video spreading online, we see a large woman throwing a table and catching a chair. A man with a hatchet. A taser. Bottles being thrown. Threats. Bluster. And, of course, black men prancing around in women’s clothing.

At his website, Walsh provides his own play-by-play for the video, including the surprising denouement:

[At the 10-second mark] Precious picks up the whole table, chucks it across the room, and then begins her rise to stardom. She blocks one chair with her pocket book, catches another chair one-handed, and then remarkably dodges a third chair with relative ease. The opposition clad in white shirts/red sleeves are noticeably impressed.

3:58 mark: “Mama!!! You was not playin’ with that table, girl!!!” This is the moment that we realize that we’ve been at a lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender party the whole time. The 1:57 mark, the taser. … it all makes sense now.

Only a few took the violence seriously. Here is a smattering of the mirth, usually provided under cover of screen name:
•“I don’t always participate in chair fights, but when I do I bring a table.
•“If you look closely at 2:10-2:18, the gentleman in the black shirt, black plants, and green hat emerges with at
least one hatchet in his right hand. let the games begin! May the odds ever be in your favor!”
•“I thought the person in the fur at the end of the video had the greatest fashion sense. He should have been declared the winner of the beauty pageant.”
•“Someone stepped on someones Jordans!”
•“The Carolina Panthers are researching the video and are requesting any known contact info about the Hulk in blue.”
•“If they had a president, he would look like Obama.”
•“I’ve analyzed the video and it’s clear that the low-orbitting moon in the blue pants didn’t catch that chair – it used its gravitational pull to reel it in.”
•“Did they get their desposit back?”
•“Precious is so badass! She threw a table, caught a chair, and never dropped her purse. Simply amazing.”
•“YOUR CHAIR CANNOT HARM ME! DO YOU NOT KNOW WHO I AM???!”

Not everyone found the situation funny.
•“As usual. Ignorant ass comments from white “boys”/trolls (because grown men do not sit on the computer and talk sh– anonymously) that don’t have the b-lls to say sh– to the ‘n-gger’s’ faces. Yeah, let’s pretend white people don’t do the same sh–.”
•“This is really embarrassing for me, personally. This just gives homophobes more justification to call us fags and other derogatory names. Just like with over heterosexual black counterparts, when they do stupid shit- they give racist white folk justification for calling us n*66*r$ and so on.”
•“This is insane! Please be mindful that these actions are NOT reflective of the larger LGBT community.”

This is not the first time this event has experienced trouble. In 2011, a fight broke out when the ball was held at the local Doubletree Inn and someone set a fire as well.

Charlotte police are investigating.
