Conservatives laughed out loud at the video of the lady saying Barack Obama had given her a phone. Conservatives used it as an example of all that was wrong with the expansion of the welfare state under Barack Obama. What many conservatives missed was that the program was a pre-existing program. In fact, the “Obamaphone” idea goes back to the Reagan Administration, but the present program was implemented in 2008 when George W. Bush was President. Government funds are not even used directly. But the truth is that plenty of RW people, at least here on SI, still believe the "Obamaphone" story. And plenty of other tall tales that the RW has made up as well--I presume that I don't have to repeat those tales here. Here, for example, is an excerpt from a post shortly after the election: For President we had the choice between one of the most moral, ethical, men in the country, who knows how to fix the economy and a man who admires Saul Alinsky, the Muslim Brotherhood and wants to redistribute our wealth…..and we chose the latter. Yesterday we sold our freedom for free birth control and an Obamaphone.Message 28547796 These are the sorts of things that feed their anger and their passion. Erickson himself feeds some of that with his pieces. Reading the comments to Erickson's piece is instructive. They all first agree with him--yes, we need to stick to facts and get the story first. Then they spout off about something on which they get facts wrong. For example, one guy talks about abortion: While we work to regain accurate language use, we must begin to recognize things that different strata and social group-think are "fact" when they are actually not truth. A few simple examples: "Safe legal abortion" is not just an oxymoron. There is NO such thing as a "Safe" abortion, most especially as pregnancy reaches term. The intimidating, and eveMn extortion aspects of PPWP clinic procedure sales need to be front and center exposed with the data available and begin to educate legislators, candidates and voters to the truth (as opposed to error of the general publics consciousness). The truth is that abortions done by an experienced accredited doctor in the first or second trimester are extremely safe procedures, unless of course there are complicating factors. Another commenter wrote, Right on Erick, we need to know the W5 + H about events, let's start with Benghazi, and says, We left men to die in battle and watched from remote locations and did nothing. And the lady who was in charge of that fiasco is going to make the case to the American people that she should be our next President. America should know if we were running guns through Benghazi to arm Syrian rebels....they should also know if we were just too political to help 4 Warriors who were sworn to protect the US Constitution and we watched them die to protect an election. He writes as if the above is truth, and the rest of us are just ignoring it. But the truth is, he has been played for a fool by people just made up a narrative and peddled it to people like himself, who accept it at face value without any real evidence to back it up. These guys just don't see themselves at all, they are oh so certain about their truths. Erickson included, although he is right in spades when he says, "We do our cause more harm than good if we get outrageously outraged over every slight and grievance. ... [W]e must also honestly acknowledge that conservatives have also screamed “Wolf” a these past few years more often than there was one."
