I have absolutely zero understanding of corporate accounting, but this post was very enlightning, also discussing deferred revenue in passing:

I believe, please correct me, that Wave earned a $1,000,000 on agreeing a contract with an OEM - ?EPL - but that it had to meet certain targets contractually before the money already paid over (?to facilitate cash flow?) could be considered "earned". I was looking for the post referring to it, but it seems to be further back than I remembered.

That's the way I made sense of it, anyway.
