The reality is that evolving technologies are going to apply consistent pressure to our economy as far as you can see into the future. Longer 100 year + average life spans are coming. Technologies in the fields of manufacturing, robotics, nanosciences, and others will push the "normal" unemployment rates much higher -- probably to something approaching 50% over the next 50 years or so.
With all due respect (tm Talladega Nights), that's just an extension of the myth that automation will necessarily increase unemployment.

And that's tangential to the question of government spending, unless you're of the belief that technology and automation will only benefit the so-called "one percenters."
