You ask the question.
"and what does this look like.......".

finance.yahoo.com^VAY+Interactive#symbol=^vay;range=my;compare=;indicator=volume;charttype=ohlc;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=off;source=undefined;

It looks like the index took a 50%+ hair cut from the 07 high to the 09 low. It then recovered and then some.
This was a great money making opportunity but some missed it. There were those calling for a huge bull market to begin at the 07 high just before the 50%+ correction. The same thing is happening now with the HERD calling for a continued up move. Most sentiment gauges have peaked bullish in the last few weeks. As market observers note, when HERD optimism. greed and bullishness peaks you are at or very near a top.
In the last 13 years the S&P has corrected twice by more than 50% and then recovered the losses. At these levels that is a lot of points. The corrections were swift as they usually are so although the same ground was covered the recoveries took much longer.
It has been a great opportunity to make money riding the market down and then up again. To have missed it would have been a tragedy. Especially in ones latter years as I am. Those kinds of swings do not happen often over the years. IMO there is one last chance over the next few years to ride it down 50%+ and then recover back up. My advice is not to miss this one.
One thing is certain, time will tell.
Good Trades

One note: These huge swings may seem like they do not matter very much as we go about our trading but IMO they matter a lot. If you are aware of them you psychologically play by different rules. The full EWP pattern is 5 motive waves and 3 corrective waves whether you are trending up or down. If you are bullish in a bear market or bearish in a bull market you are constantly looking in the wrong direction. What you expect to happen just never seems to come to fruition. It is like constantly swimming upstream. Not a good thing.
