U.N. vote expected on Iraq's
oil-for-food program

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The United
Nations Security Council is expected to vote
Thursday on a resolution to renew Iraq's
oil-for-food program for another six months,
while delaying any decision on increasing the
amount of oil Iraq can sell.

The current program, which expires Friday,
allows Iraq to sell $2.14 billion worth of oil
every six months to buy food and medicine.

A British-drafted resolution -- which is
supported by the United States -- would
renew the program for six months and
express the Security Council's "willingness" to consider ways to increase food
supplies and distribution in Iraq.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan suggested in a report to the council Monday that
the 15-member body increase the amount of oil Iraq can sell, but did not name any
figures. He is expected to do so in a report due in January, which means the council
could consider an increase in February, according to key council members.
