When people think of solar - they should think of jobs and innovation - you get something for that "higher cost". Just getting something cheaper is not always the best strategy.

We can do this - there are all sorts of benefits - and actually, this is one of the areas where bioengineering is appropriate (as opposed to our food supply). Solar-driven energy harvesting may not rival photovoltaic, but biotech energy harvesting will cost a lot less to implement and is very scalable, producing all sorts of useful chemicals.

Is it known what the current percentage of California's power is generated by renewable sources? That may give us a fix on whether it is realistic to attain 33% generation by 2013.
