Global PC Sales Seen Growing 15 Pct In Q4 - IDC

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (Reuters) - Worldwide sales of personal computers will grow by 15% during the 1997 fourth quarter, despite the turmoil in Asian economies, International Data said today.

Sales in the U.S. market will grow 21 percent, following third quarter growth of 20 percent, IDC said. Other regions outside Asia will also see strong sales performances, it said. In 1998, the U.S. is expected to continue this performance with unit growth of 17 percent, outpacing
the worldwide rate of 13.5 percent, IDC said. IDC said a healthy U.S. economic picture coupled with a booming market for low-cost personal computers should trigger a strong holiday buying season.

By contrast, the outlook in the Asia/Pacific and Japanese PC markets has grown gloomier, it said. Asia/Pacific -- excluding Japan -- PC sales growth is expected to fall to 14% in the fourth quarter from more than 20% in the previous two quarters, IDC said.

The currency crisis that started in Southeast Asia in the third quarter will alter demand for PCs in the 4th Q and into 1998, it said.
