Because they are regulated monopolies.
Duh.. And you're saying that government regulation is requiring regulated utilities to use renewable fuels that are MORE COSTLY than more widely available fuels.

I'm all for ANY kind of fuel that provides and economic BENEFIT, not a tax, that reduces the cost of that energy to consumers.

If your renewables cannot commercially complete, nor hold the potential for doing some point in the near-future (due to scalability), you are harming the economy and putting people out of work.

Find me renewable energy that is reliable, leads to 24x7x365 (minus downtime for routine maintenance) baseload power THAT IS EQUAL TO, or MORE EFFICIENT than current sources and you will have my support.

But you can't provide that, now can you? That's why this administration pumped BILLIONS into companies like Solyndra, only to have them go bankrupt.

In the meantime, we're seeing an increased focus on Natural Gas, which is already widely used in Vehicles in parts of Asia.

Now what we need is a cheaper form of nuclear power, possibly Thorium based. If we plan carefully, then when the NG runs out, we'll have the distribution and storage network set up for hydrogen.. the ULTIMATE RENEWABLE (if you have cheap electricity) and the CLEANEST FUEL possible..
