With an external modem, you can install drivers to use model specific features (and I do), but you do not have to, Windows has its own general purpose drivers that will work. The real point is that external modems are MUCH more "standard" and less invasive to the system than internal modems. Also, all external modems are pure hardware modems, while it has become impossible to even tell if an internal modem is a hardware modem or a software modem that uses the CPU to do DSP instead of using dedicated modem hardware to accomplish the task.
