How is that an excuse?
This isn't the first time in the history of America that a president had to deal with an unwilling Congress, much less one-half thereof.

You obviously think the Republicans are just being obstructionist because they want Obama to fail. But the Republicans have been very clear from the beginning that Obama has to get serious about cutting spending. That's why the Republicans aren't budging from their position.

So what does Obama do? Go to the public and exaggerate the effects of spending cuts. That does not sound like a president who is making any good faith efforts toward compromise.

Mix in your usual "middle class" and "rich have to pay their fair share" rhetoric, and it's clear that Obama wants to marginalize the House Republicans.
